Numbers of Smew wintering in the UK have ⬇️ sharply in recent years, declining by 84% since 1996/97. This is due to short-stopping as the number of 'White Nuns' has ⬆️ in Sweden in the same period. Read more in the Waterbirds in the UK 2022/23 report here👉bit.ly/3WxpKrF

2) After joining WWT in 1993, Rich went on to lead the way in species recovery.

He managed the UK’s goose and swan monitoring programme, and worked with endangered species all over the world.

His advocacy and guidance helped to shape protections for wetlands globally.

This month, we were deeply saddened to learn that our colleague Rich Hearn had passed away.

Rich was an inspiring teammate, mentor and conservationist, and a passionate voice for wetlands.

He was hugely valued, and will be hugely missed.
