Thread: 1/ The national conversation on higher education is terribly distorted, beginning with the assumption that faculties are a hotbed of radicalism and that students are invariably 'woke.' The vast majority of faculty and students at places like Columbia are not activists.

Hope those threatening to boycott or disrupt commencement realize this will have 0 effect on uni's, Biden's, Bibi's, or Hamas' actions, but it will reduce public support for cause & for higher ed.

My $.02: BA '24 ≈ HS '20. Don't sabotage their chance of one normal graduation.

The language the The New York Times reporters use here glorifies self-immolation -- the stoic hero standing tall and quietly awaiting his fate. Gross.

Editors who refuse to send papers out for review b/c they or unnamed readers dislike the authors' govt are discriminating by national origin.

Editors aren't employers so US laws prohibiting national origin discrim don't apply. It's still not right.

Said tongue in cheek, I suspect, but gets at an absolutely valid point. Structuring graduate education this way contributes to Econ's huge gender gaps, which are widest at the top programs.

(Econ has most gender segregation by prestige of PhD program of any NAS research field.)

You may know I love a good nonlinear interaction effect. This one is particularly interesting. For moms, no such thing as too much time devoted to family. In contrast, fathers get huge benefit from small amount of leave -- but at some point people seem to think 'go back to work.'
