Pleased to report we have good numbers of Cowslips in flower in our meadow... They seem to be increasing in number every year.
A great indicator species of nice habitats, but sadly more common on verges now than in fields/meadows.

Our survey season is officially underway!

Wading bird survey this morning... clouds of Curlew... rather incredible!

We have had a weather station recording away here at Wild Lakeland HQ for the last 14 years...

This April is very comfortably the wettest recorded, and to compare, 2012 was the wettest nationally going back to 1836.

As you can see, 2012 wasn't THAT wet here!

Bird Cherry (Prunus padus) is one of the earliest trees to come into leaf and it's also fairly early to flower. This is the first raceme of blossom to appear on this tree, just in time for #TreeFlowers for #Wildflowerhour

Fascinating to watch our Tree Sparrows picking sprigs of lavender while nest building...

I wonder if it serves a purpose?

Stobohope is a 1000 ha valley in the Peeblesshire hills, lying in a National Scenic Area. Rich in wildlife including black grouse and golden eagle. Scottish Forestry have awarded a £2m grant for 500 ha (5 km2) sitka spruce here without asking for an EIA. crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-stobo-h…

Phew! Just managed to find a Common Dog-violet for #WildflowerHour in the nick of time before it becomes too dark for a photo!
Sadly a local population of Sweet Violets have gone to seed (my original planned tweet)

A productive day looking at a farm with lots of wet grassland and a very impressive wading bird population.

Here is a nest I found. Who knows which species this belongs to?

Wood Anemones have just come into flower here in the last two days, just in time for the #WoodlandPlants theme for #WildflowerHour .
This one here appeared in a shady corner of our meadow out of nowhere a couple of years ago.

Seeing Ladybirds all over the place today, more than for quite a few years. Anyone else seeing lots?

Cardamines (Bitter-cresses) in the Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape .
Hairy Bitter-cress (L) - 4 stamens, pods overtop flowers, doesn't have hairs on the stem!, prefers drier habitats.
Wavy Bitter-cress (R) - 6 stamens, pods = flowers and more stem leaves.
