To those who opposed a clear reference to phase out of fossil fuels during the #COP28 Climate Conference, I want to say:

Whether you like it or not, fossil fuel phase out is inevitable. Let’s hope it doesn’t come too late.

Let me just say it’s f*cked that AOSIS wasn’t in the room when #COP28 President gavelled the decision, and it was painful the way their objections after the fact were “noted”. These are the voices that have tirelessly pushed ambition into this process. We should have heard them.

🖊️With the final text in hand, it's clear that #COP28 was a 'People-Powered Progress and Fossil-Fueled Failure” summit, despite attempts by many leaders to portray it as a success.

3/ But yes: the #COP28 outcome is appalling as #fossilfuels cheerleaders secured so many loopholes - intent on using these to justify their planet-wrecking plans for a continued expansion of fossil fuels extraction...

2/ yet, even in this most favourable environment, the #FossilFuels industry & its governmental backers failed to prevent what people and most impacted countries demanded: a recognition of need to transition away from fossil fuels. There will be no turning back from here.

The decision at #COP28 to finally recognize that the climate crisis is, at its heart, a fossil fuel crisis is an important milestone. But it is also the bare minimum we need and is long overdue. The influence of petrostates is still evident in the half measures and loopholes…

With only 7 years to achieve the SDGs and halve emissions, United Nations SDG Advocates are calling for urgent #ClimateAction at #COP28 .
