This past weekend was the 30th anniversary of the official end of South Africa's brutal apartheid system.

Our 2023 report, 'The Racial Wealth Gap in South Africa and the United States,' offers insights into the lasting effects of this system, in comparison with the U.S.

Report authors Grieve Chelwa, Mashekwa Maboshe and Darrick Hamilton found that in South Africa the typical Black household owns 5% of the wealth held by a typical white household. In the United States that number is 6%.

The fact that the racial wealth gap in the U.S. is similar to that of a country that just a generation ago emerged from the yoke of decades of apartheid is a sobering indictment on American racial inequality writ large.
