Bit damp in Bhutan but that couldn't dampen our spirits, especially when the number 1 butterfly target was found - the national butterfly of Bhutan, Ludlow's Bhutan Glory (Bhutanitis ludlowi).

This Long-tailed Blue has been spotted near Shrewsbury Park in Greenwich. Its a rare migrant and summer-breeding species, but unable to overwinter in the UK. Only 5 other records on iRecord this year in southern England. 📷John Denton 👉bit.ly/3yBsMS0 Butterfly Conservation Kent & SE London

Despite a stiff breeze and poor visibility, we saw plenty of Grayling on our field trip to Gwennap Head. Jerry knew where the Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Small Copper and Green Hairstreak might be found - and astonishingly, we saw some Green Hairstreak on 15th August!

The Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) did not like the wet winter and spring, numbers are the lowest since the start of the Dutch Butterfly Monitoring. No doubt the species will bounce back once we have another dry year.

Strong migration of Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta) this morning as picked up on a bird migration site near the coast in SW NL. 4033 Red Admirals in 4.35h, so almost 15 per minute. trektellen.org/count/view/11/…

The Southern Small White (Pieris mannii, scheefbloemwitje) is the most abundant Pieris-white in my village at the moment, which is for the first time. The species apparently profited from the combination of a wet spring and a hot summer.
