Academics help me out with some data. How often do you have to apply for a time-only extension for your research grants?

So the results of the poll are in and less than 10% of academics say they rarely need to request time-only extensions with most saying it’s almost always needed. So why are funders doing this? Shouldn’t default contracts be for 1 or 2 years longer than budgeted just in case?
