Genuinely remarkable that apparently the story of the night is Reform rather than, you know, the party that has won every seat thus far

biggest party majority in over a generation! most of the cabinet have lost their jobs! the Lib Dems have done better than they had in ages! but somehow most of what we're getting is the Tories who've unexpectedly clung on, and the few Reform wins - it's weird!

I know I keep banging on about this - and there is a conversation to have about democratic deficits and voting reform. I just don't remember similar mass outrage over FPTP when the Lib Dems got 11 MPs with 11.5% of the vote in 2019. They were basically just told to suck it up

And where the hell was that Rishi Sunak during his disastrous campaign? Much better delivery, much better tone. #GeneralElection2024

The reason journalists are already fixating with danger for Lab at next election is that they've got used to a party winning a majority and doing nothing with it (see last 5 years). So they can't conceive of a gov that can enact policies that will define its standing in 2029.

nice of Sunak to call Starmer a "decent, public spirited man" but can't help feeling some cognitive dissonance after a Tory campaign which portrayed the Labour leader as some kind of threat to the nation

When I retire I'll write a proper Marxist and postcolonial critique of Thomas the Tank Engine (SO MUCH to say...) but this headline is not exactly a surprise to anyone who has watched it.

On visits to Italy when my son was still little, we would sit in a café in my hometown and people-watch. His favourites were the men entering, ordering "un caffè", drinking it at the bar, then leaving all in the space of 1 min. The truest Italian cultural experience.

good to call out the far right, even better to start talking about immigrants and asylum seekers like they're real, breathing people deserving of respect and dignity

Our plan was so appalling (practically and morally) that most of its supporters persuaded themselves it was something it wasn’t so they could support it.

Academic libraries are places of great serendipity - many of the books I borrow I have no idea about but find them next to things I was actively searching for. What are universities for if not this kind of lateral creativity?
