The saddest compilation video I have ever made. But perhaps also the most positive if it causes a reduction in plastic pollution in 2024. In once pristine seas, every nearshore plankton sample I now collect contains plastic microfibers. (Sound On) ZEISS Microscopy

Burning also exacerbates the climate and nature crises, and our lack of healthy bogs is making down-valley flooding more frequent and worse. We need to protect natural flood defences like our peatlands to mitigate the worst effects of the climate emergency.

"Sewage dumped in rivers by Thames Water increases fivefold." Wonder how that govt plan for water thing is going, you remember, all that cracking down nonsense, holding fat cat industry bosses to account, greenest govt ever, blah, blah, blah? telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/01/2โ€ฆ

To all you developers out there. To all you money greedy men in suits. To all of you that donโ€™t give a toss about the natural world, stop felling the lungs of our planet! Trees are amazing & we need them. Enlighten yourselves and go & read a book about the ways that trees give

Excellent to hear of โฆNational Trustโฉ plans to expand temperate rainforest sites in north Devon, though obviously hoping these plans involve lots of natural regeneration, not just planting: โฆPatrick Beggโฉ โฆLuke Barleyโฉ can you share more? theguardian.com/environment/20โ€ฆ

Hedgerows are miraculous habitats: skinny wildwoods, bird-larders, carbon stores, species shelters. Now first full (LIDAR) map of England's vast hedge-network is out. Laid end to end they'd girdle the Earth ten times. Let's celebrate hedges! Pics, stories? bbc.co.uk/news/science-eโ€ฆ

These rivers have all tested +ve for thiamethoxam since 2020 (data from Env Agency). This neonicotinoid was banned in Europe in 2018, but is allowed on sugar beet crops in UK. That is its only authorised use. Yet it is turning up in rivers all over the place... Hugely concerning.

Apparently this madness actually is real. An election leaflet from local MP Mrs Flick Drummond Constituents asked to stop emptying their baths, flushing the loo or "using machines during heavy downpours" to help stop the sewage system dumping sh*t into the nearest river. WOW!

A truly momentous day for our seabirds. After decades of work from many passionate, dedicated and talented people, finally we will see an end to industrial sandeel fishing in the north sea. Very proud of my RSPB colleagues without whom this would not have happened โค๏ธ

Our new research finds that spot-on flea treatments on pets are a major source of river contamination with potent insecticides. Also, owners hands are continually contaminated by contact with treated pets. Pls RT (1/2) theguardian.com/environment/20โ€ฆ Rose Perkins PAN UK

Natural Flood Management Making space for water, storing it safely in the landscape is something that needs to be addressed across the country, as we face more extreme weather events. 1 NFM measure is reconnecting rivers to their floodplain, like our Og Rewiggling project. #NFM
