Ontario could have delayed corner store beer by just 12 months & saved taxpayers $225 million. Instead, Doug is sending 25,000 families to work & pay taxes for a year to give a massive windfall to his friends. They donโ€™t just think youโ€™re dumb. They hate you.

Heโ€™s right. Buying a home in ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต is easy: - get on a train in Tokyo - travel the equivalent distance of San Francisco, CA to Reno, NV - pay $100k - boom! You own a home in the last city north of Fukushima to show soil radiation & locals donโ€™t want to live. Itโ€™s that easy.

tl;dr ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆโ€™s low corruption: - no where to report corruption - most departments do not have whistleblower protections - ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ uses deferred prosecution agreements (DPA) to avoid any official corruption ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ doesnโ€™t have a lack of corruption. It has so much it canโ€™t even be prosecuted.

Okay, ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ. I need you to look past the left vs right BS for a sec. You don't understand how hard you're being screwed. In a few tweets, you'll understand gov finance better than most politicians. You'll also see how f*cked up Ontario's corner store liquor deal is. <thread>๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡

2/ Rushing the deal means taxpayers will shoulder an initial bill of $1b. If paid in cash, that tax revenue is equivalent to 111k families working for a year. Imagine the whole city of Windsor going to work for a year. All to pay that bill. But ON is broke, it has little cash.

Stephen Punwasi ๐Ÿš๏ธ๐Ÿ“‰๐Ÿˆโ˜ƒ๏ธ (@stephenpunwasi) 's Twitter Profile Photo

3/ When ON spends excess money, it has to run a deficit. It'll try to get the federal gov to pay some (read:taxpayers everywhere), and borrow the rest. But let's say ON will borrow the whole amount. Last bond was 3.8% interest, so add another 51k families to cover interest.

5/ Let's gloss over foreign currency exchange risk, which could see CAD fall 10% and add another 7k households working to pay it off. We'll also gloss over the fact there's only so much CAD demand, so ON crowding the market results in all borrowing costs rising.

Question for the middle class folks who keep explaining the rich got where they are because theyโ€™re smart & work hard. If thatโ€™s the case, are you middle class because youโ€™re dumb or lazy?
