in both stages, we have the same basic construction of the enemy: the liberal elites. the right can never fill that position (despite exit polls) of elites worthy of opposing.
They're either irrelevant or merely 'populist'—ie, occupying both left and right, obscuring opposition.

the distinction here is one of distraction vs. defense. in stage 1, we are told the right is irrelevant, so we ought to concentrate laser-like on the hypostatized liberal elites. in stage 2, the right is just an understandable popular left/right grouping against the lib elites.
