Once, there was a little cat called Sasha, who lived with a young, melancholy princess in the Nikolayevsky dvorets in St Petersburg. Sasha had the old Siberian skill of seeing ghosts & she stalked the cold palace corridors protecting her mistress from wraiths & shadows & doubles.

Old Fox had gone to the Sheep Church where it was very quiet & still. Just the sound of the wind & the sea in the distance. There he sat for a very long time, so long that a few of the old ghosts made to settle with him, their russets & silks thin in the late afternoon light.

From his high hilltop, Old Fox could see very long-ago things take place. An elegant carriage bringing an elderly uncle to the manor, a poet & his love walking through the woods & talking of Napoleon, wild plum blooming as King William died. And he sighed for the passage of time.

I just don’t feel right, said Wolf miserably. I feel all flat & round & scratchy as a carriage rug. You need a brisk walk, a hot bath & a nice bowl of vegetable soup, said Old Fox. Oh fine, said Wolf, fine.
