At year's end, an enormous THANK YOU to all of the list-makers and round-uppers who've nodded to THE RETRIEVALS. Including The Atlantic, Vogue Magazine, & @Vulture, which named it #1: 'Brilliant, unforgettable, and the best thing I’ve heard all year.” vulture.com/article/best-p…

My husband has always brought beauty & grace to writing in miniature—one of his first jobs at The New Yorker was movie blurbs—and this thread is no exception. I am so sad about this news but proud of Mike, too, for all of the meaningful work he has done and will continue to do.

.Amber Tamblyn asked wonderful questions about The Retrievals: about process, content, responses, and takeaways. Thank you! 🙏💛

I love @dcopaken's passionate response to The Retrievals: 'From the moment I could hold a pen, I have spent much of my life writing down the secret pains about which I (and so many women) are urged to suck it up and stay silent.' open.substack.com/pub/deborahcop…

Recommended August cluster for those interested in medical history & culture of medicine:

Jennifer Vanderbes' 'Wonder Drug: The Secret History of Thalidomide';
Susan Burton's remarkable podcast 'The Retrievals,'
Netflix series 'Painkiller,'' which sent to Hulu's 'Dopesick' ...

As a tweet composer I am mediocre—but script writing: that is a task that is deeply important to me. I am so thrilled to hear this. Thank you, Sara Ivry 🙏

I was moved by this wrenching essay. The part where the doctors ignore her severe pain for 20+ years is only the beginning. Lizzie O'Leary, thank you for your kind words about and serious consideration of The Retrievals. Means the world to me.

Best podcast of 2023 so far and it’s going to be hard to beat. Somehow, in only 5 episodes, Susan Burton sums up women’s pain, their own responses to it, society’s nonchalance about it and the damage done by the response. Thank you to the women who shared. open.spotify.com/show/6EvG4iL7s…

It's very exciting to me that these first two episodes are out in the world and that listeners are responding to all the different layers that are so important here. Thank you, Pamela Colloff.

On the radio this weekend: Dozens of women seeking to become mothers came to a fertility clinic at Yale. We bring you the first episode of Serial's new five-part series, about the shocking events that unfolded there. Hosted by our own Susan Burton. bit.ly/3JyghZJ

Confessional-radio alert! Rebroadcast of “Secrets,” an episode that opened up a lot for me, this weekend.

EMPTY is a deal of the day! #1 in Popular Adolescent Psychology, a category to which my teenage self might have added a hyphen (Popular-Adolescent Psychology); smirked, & then felt shame, because of course 'popular' always meant too much to her, even when she pretended it didn't.

Physically I feel OK: at this point, just stuffy. Psychologically is a different story: uneasy/lonely/sad. But grateful for my mild symptoms, 3 shots, and access to tests. 8/

Personally (since you may be wondering about the personally) I am not at the 10-day mark. My symptoms started on 12/16 and I got my first antigen positive on 12/20. I've tested positive every day since then. 7/

This thread kind of addresses my Q; but need links to studies. Or scientist to explain science . . . could the antigen test detect virus that is incapable of causing harm to others? One UK redditor described positive antigens for like 2.5 weeks. twitter.com/michaelmina_la…

Does the fact that Omicron causes symptoms so early in vaccinated folks have something to do with it? Like what was day zero is now day negative five and we need to adjust isolation window accordingly? 5/

So people are in a bind. CDC says, be free if you are 10 days out and 24-hours fever-free and symptoms improving. But how to square that recommendation with: if you are positive on an antigen, you are infectious and need to stay in? 4/

There seems to be no specific public-health guidance about persistent positives on antigen tests. And based on what I am seeing—this Q is going to start coming up a lot. 3/
