Deleted and updating my last tweet on CDC's test. This was one lot of an established test where the manufacturing was being outsourced. Not the same as what happened in Zika and Covid, so shouldn't be lumped in with past woes. The core test still works

NEW: As bird flu spreads in cows, U.S. response has echoes of early covid. Testing of cows too limited. Results + studies not shared fast enough. Genetic analysis of H5N1 suggests outbreak started months before it was noticed. w ⁦Rachel Roubein⁩ washingtonpost.com/health/2024/04…

NEW: U.S. requires more dairy cows tested for bird flu as viral concerns grow. Until now, testing has been voluntary, and limited to cows with symptoms, which has drawn criticism from public health experts. Fenit Nirappil and me. washingtonpost.com/health/2024/04…

ICYMI: Now that bird flu has gone from cows in U.S. to a dairy worker, we look at how prepared the U.S. is for a bird flu pandemic. Vaccines, antiviral meds, and surveillance are key. ⁦Rachel Roubein⁩ and me. washingtonpost.com/health/2024/04…

Great story by ⁦Dan Diamond⁩ that explains why a health insurance program that 45 million Americans depend on—and that GOP demonized—is now so popular that Dems can now tout ACA’s many benefits on the stump. washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/…

UPDATE: USDA incorrectly reported presumptive positive bird flu in dairy cows in Ohio, officials said. So it’s 5 affected states: Texas, Kansas, and now Michigan, Idaho and New Mexico. “Cow-to-cow transmission definitely playing a role,” Idaho state vet tells me.

It is great that CDC has provided patients with some guidance on indoor air!!! Two things could improve it: Benefits should discuss reduction of PM2.5 and smoke exposure and (1/2) Ventilation Can Reduce Exposure to Respiratory Viruses in Indoor Spaces cdc.gov/ncird/whats-ne…
