1/ How do steroids cause an increase in the white blood cell (WBC) count (i.e., leukocytosis)? And, how do steroids tamp down inflammation if it appears that there are more WBCs in the blood after they are administered? Seems like a paradox in need of a thread.

Biden is vaccinated. He’s at a distance, while working with a staff that should also have been vaccinated, in a space that should be very well ventilated. He shouldn’t need a mask. It’s a symbol of solidarity to wear one. It’s good.

So fun working with UNC Instructional Media and the leaders of SHAC Ophtho on an eye exam training for med student volunteers working our student-run clinic! Credits-- Lauren in role of Ms. Iris; renowned method actor Adele in role of "medical student"

Cool down after great lecture on DM from John Buse! Learning about clinical wisdom and philosophies on pt care in preclinical phases is so impactful for med students, but the pace of curriculum makes it hard to dive in. How can preclinical ed build more space for mentorship?

Labeling a pt with "antisocial personality disorder" is as medically useful as putting "just a bad apple" on a problem list-- no therapeutic benefit but can guarantee future healthcare interactions laden with bias. No thank you DSM.

realized today that I know favorite music of almost every pt on the geri psych service. to me that sums up how cool it is to be a med student. time is a gift. talking without pretense is a gift. a lot to learn from operating outside the highly transactional space of healthcare.

So excited to attend the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) 2022 Meeting in aging research 🥳 Thank you GSA, AGHE, and UNC Center for Aging & Health for the support and this opportunity to soak up new ideas in such an incredible interdisciplinary space!

since sophomore year of college i’ve been involved with a lawsuit alleging unc discriminates against white applicants in the admission process. today, five years later, i watched scotus debate that question as well as the future of affirmative action. some thoughts! 🧵

Spectacular grand rounds from John Buse UNC School of Medicine today!! My pearls: 1. Alternative targeted strategies for diabetes management (see below) 2. SGLT2i in heart failure 3. “motivate not castigate” (+ celebrate progress) approach to partnering in chronic dx management

ChatGPT is not great with precise info, but is AMAZING at vaguely musing on medical topics like it’s wintering at its hunting lodge and transfixed by the four humours lol
