📣 Calling the police on campus 'in response to nonviolent student protest is beyond the pale, and it really undermines the standing of the university as a place of free, open, and robust dialogue and debate.”

The 's violent response to student protests is nothing short of appalling and is part of a larger pattern of the kinds of abuse that New Yorkers routinely face.

1/ Although colleges determine their own unique codes of conduct, they cannot sidestep their own rules and guidance in retaliation of speech they disagree with.

Make sure to know your rights to protesting at public + private institutions:

New Yorkers are tired of begging for crumbs, fighting tooth and nail just to reverse cuts rather than expanding our investment in the programs, services, and institutions that provide for all of us. My statement on the administration’s executive budget👇🏽

We oppose the proposed cuts to education, community development programs, and more - these programs aren’t just line items in a budget but lifelines for the hundreds of families and youth members we serve.

Far from keeping students safe, the deployment of the NYPD’s violent Strategic Response Group at campuses risks students’ wellbeing and escalates demonstrations into tense and aggressive scenes.

The SRG has no place at these protests.

JC statement on Mayor Eric Adams's retaliatory - and frankly petty and despicable - move to oust the NYC CCRB Board Chair. NYC needs a mayor that prioritizes the needs of NYers, not protecting abusive police. Pls read and share.

ALL students deserve to learn and feel safe no matter their political beliefs and religious practices. But NYU’s decision to call the NYPD in response to last night’s student encampment with Within Our Lifetime put its own community of students and faculty in harm’s way.

Read our statement on Columbia: jfrej.org/news/2024/04/j…

We invite fellow Jews to join us in asking: what can we do this chag season to remember, recommit & continue building movements to get out of Mitzrayim, the narrow place, & towards a future where all are free & safe?

The aggression displayed by the NYPD last night against NYU faculty & students is unacceptable. NYC CCRB must look into the NYPD’s actions.

Universities, and Columbia University in particular, have a long tradition of student advocacy, where viewpoints are tested and debate is encouraged.

Columbia rushing to call the cops on their own students for demonstrating on campus betrays that legacy.

For THE CITY, NYPD confirms 108 arrests thus far, Columbia says anyone who participated is suspended, though they haven't confirmed #'s. By 2pm police had cleared the lawn of protesters, though hundreds more have since set up in another portion of lawn.

What a shameful decision to not discipline the cops involved in the killing of , on the eve of the five-year anniversary of his death.

Our communities are experiencing real harm at the hands of police.
