Given the mention of Panopto being used to surveil faculty, today's a good day to recommend Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness by Dr. Simone Browne.

🚨NEW PUB🚨 Why is There a Picture of Me on Snapchat?: Educational Approaches to Overposting: rdcu.be/dIhRi

I wrote this paper with 2 UNT doc students based on a class project where we wanted to think through what constitutes 'overcasting' on social media in education.

No Ethan Mollick. YOU need to decide to remind yrself-every day & as often a possible-that yr experiences teaching at Wharton do not constitute you as an authority on the world's educators and learners.

Your lack of epistemic humility in speaking for 'us' is breathtaking.

Khan is very good at ignoring history in order to tell tales favorable to his products. Like 2 paragraphs on Joseph Weizenbaum & ELIZA followed by suggesting chatbots for therapy & academic coaching without mentioning Weizenbaum found such applications a ‘“monstrous obscenity.’”

I'm slogging my through the introduction. Khan is already referring to Sam and Greg (that is OpenAI's Sam Altman and Greg Brockman) and says the quiet part out loud with this admission:

In Jasmine Roberts-Crews's piece, she demonstrates the unacknowledged centrality of Black feminist pedagogy to the development of what we now know as open education practices. As she argues, centering this Black feminist praxis opens new pathways to a more socially just open education.

This panel was today and, yet again, I'm so damn grateful to be learning alongside such wonderful, brilliant students.

Time to revisit Meredith Whittaker's 'The Steep Cost of Capture' and her observation that, 'These companies control the tooling, development environments, languages, and software that define the AI research process—they make the water in which AI research swims.' ainowinstitute.org/publication/th…

Emotion AI in schools ... most people agree that computers can't 'detect' emotions, so why are AI products now being sold to monitor attention, concentration, distraction etc? I talk to Nathalie DiBerardino about the problems with this form of EdTech: buzzsprout.com/1301377/150635…
