The largest ever recorded leap in the amount of carbon dioxide in the world’s atmosphere has just occurred.

Today, Scripps reported its largest one year jump of 4.7 ppm in monthly average CO2 at Mauna Loa (Mar 24 v Mar 23). Dr Ralph Keeling commented that climate ”stabilization will require that CO2 levels start to fall. Instead, CO2 is rising faster than ever.” buff.ly/4dvZYKg

There has been a striking chorus of critics taking issue with the survey of IPCC scientists Damian Carrington conducted for the Guardian, which showed the majority expected warming of 2.5C to 3C. Critics called this doomerism. Glen Peters shows it is simply the state of the science.

One of the biggest under-reported issues in the world right now is the battle between the raw economics of renewables and the inertia of grid constraints and planning systems. Who wins, or rather the pace at which renewables win, will determine if we get 2C or 3C of warming.

Nahel Belgherze How the hell can anybody say that this is normal or that we can just adapt? They are not ok, our planet is not ok. We need to panic and do something or else we will continue to be eliminated from this planet if we don’t.

The sheer scale of the flooding in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, Brazil, which is home to over 4 million people, is hard to comprehend. Thousands of homes flooded, towns cut off, dozens killed, hundreds missing.

I constantly hear the argument, 'people won't accept this action'. What they mean is they won't accept this action. Only the top 10%, and to a smaller extent, the top 20% would have to make changes to their lifestyle. The top 1% the most.

Incredible historical document here: Blinken says Israel’s PR is failing because social media allows people a direct look at what’s happening, shorn of the ability to mediate it, and it lands with emotional resonance. Romney then says yes, that’s why we moved to ban TikTok

What a coincidence that almost exactly the same kind of article —with mostly same players— gets published in authoritarian countries when they face an organic mass movement.

There, it is often part of an explicit appeal to antisemitism or “globalism” to discredit real movements.

The IRA might end up getting the US 20% of the way towards goals, after challenges are met, but we won't really have climate action without there being a coherent narrative of what society needs to do - the changes are too multisectoral to happen only in the background.

The IRA is quiet climate policy in that no one has actually heard of it. Projects get proposed - some will be built, but too many others opposed or canceled... either for offline reasons (building materials, transformer supply, etc) or due to online-networked opposition.

Excellent discussion today on extreme heat Asian Development Bank meeting in Tbilisi. My message: climate finance has to move faster. Climate adaptation projects have to move faster. Clean energy projects have to move faster. In a 🔥 world, speed is equity. Speed is justice. Speed saves lives.
