.Crispin Kaheru: Journalists keep people informed; they uncover and expose facts that may not necessarily be appreciated by some sections of society. I'm sure you know this better than I do.
Today I did my part in building the nation: Here representing Media Focus on Africa Uganda with my seniors Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) commissioner Crispin Kaheru & ACME Africa ED George Lugalambi after the presser to announce the coming #WorldPressFreedomDay24 celebrations that takes place Every May 3rd...
.Crispin Kaheru: So without adequate safeguards, the effects on ensuring a press for the planet, as our theme goes, will be in vain. Press freedom, independent, and quality journalism will not be able to be part of the solutions to the global environmental crisis.
.Crispin Kaheru: We really hope that ultimately, we are able to increase awareness about issues of media and the environment, freedom of expression, freedom of the media, and the need to protect journalists and media practitioners.
.Crispin Kaheru: We also hope to draw the attention of duty bearers and the citizenry to the critically urgent matter of the environmental catastrophe facing our country and our Earth.
.Crispin Kaheru: I want to call upon all stakeholders, primarily the Govt, to support all press efforts to bring awareness on issues affecting the environment, to initiate and pass appropriate policies and laws that will encourage and facilitate proper coverage of environmental issues.
.Crispin Kaheru: I also want to call upon the public to support, and where relevant and possible, to give and facilitate the press with information and access on issues affecting the environment.
.Crispin Kaheru: Journalists and newsrooms in Uganda require skills, they require resources, and a conducive atmosphere for the environment to report effectively.
.Crispin Kaheru: The media require independence. The media require safety, and journalists require security, but they also require capacity. And they also must adhere to professional ethics in order to effectively play their important role.
.Crispin Kaheru: For the media to provide the required accurate and reliable information for holding powers to account, and the platforms for debate.
The theme for this year's celebration is 'A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis.'
Crispin Kaheru: The important role of the media in championing good environmental practices and policies, and to draw attention to the requisite conditions.
Mr. Crispin Kaheru, the Commissioner of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, along with Dr. George Lugalambi, the Executive Director of ACME Africa, is addressing the media regarding the World Press Freedom Day.
Experts on civil matters have blamed the current spate of unbecoming reactions from voters and mayhems in political parties on widespread lack of civic education in the country.
