Strawberry 'Black Prince' raised in 1850 by Mr Cuthill of Camberwell. Now incredibly rare but still being grown by fruit expert stewart waine, who is helping to keep our plant heritage alive.

Remembering my lovely mum on her birthday, pictured here at Kew Gardens in the late 1950s. She was an inspirational gardener and people took detours on their walks to enjoy her front garden. The prunus triloba was usually in its full glory on her special day.

A real favourite of mine, just coming into leaf..the charming pink leaves of Acer pseudoplatanus ‘Brilliantissimum’…

🧵Michael Stefani posted a photo of his beautiful daffodil Irene Copeland and I promised to look out more Copeland introductions. William F M Copeland (1872-1953) was a Southampton amateur breeder. Pictured here are his daughters Mary (l) and Irene (r) at the 1929 RHS show.

Michael Stefani Copeland was known as 'the king of the double daffodil' and here is, Irene Copeland, his fullest introduction, raised in 1915.

Michael Stefani Mary Copeland is another vintage beauty, introduced in 1912 and named for Copeland's elder daughter.

Michael Stefani The paler Mrs William Copeland, named for the breeder's wife, was introduced more than a decade later in 1930.

Michael Stefani White Lion was Copeland's last introduction - another variety with a very full and pretty flower.

Michael Stefani Copeland's only surviving single introduction was John Evelyn, bred in 1920 and named after the 17th century diarist.
