my APA presidential address on 'does thought require sensory grounding? from pure thinkers to large language models' is now published. i argue for no: so, even if LLMs lack sensory grounding, this doesn't entail that they can't think or understand. philpapers.org/rec/CHADTR

thread summary: although the scaling hypothesis is often discussed as if it's widely held, few seem to publicly endorse it. apparent exceptions: Ilya Sutskever, Irina Rish (some version), scott alexander (40%), and some say amodei and hinton. a survey & metasurvey would be useful!
