This seems like kind of a random and somewhat shallow analysis? What it should discuss: unsustainable shift towards finance and rent; undermining of the social reproduction of labour; and the long-term effects of austerity and hollowing out of the state nytimes.com/2024/01/02/bus…

Very informative history of Gaza. “In 1659, one French traveler described it as ‘a very cheerful and agreeable place’”

“You asked for performative cruelty towards foreigners that does absolutely nothing to solve our very real problems while also causing not-insignificant harm to the few economic sectors that we haven’t yet fully fucked over AND WE’VE DELIVERED!”

“How to Make Room for One Million New Yorkers” Yet another Grand Plan for Housing that focuses only on design questions and says nothing about tenure, rent, power, etc. There could be social or speculative versions of this, with *very* different outcomes nytimes.com/interactive/20…

David Graeber: “I only came to fully understand the agony of the Palestinian situation when I came to understand that the entire point of life, in traditional Palestinian society, is put oneself in a position where you can be generous to strangers”.

'It is very telling that some of Israel’s own supporters instead go to extraordinary lengths to utterly silence the other side. Smearing one’s opponents is rarely a tactic employed by those confident that justice is on their side.'

It is morally monstrous to deny that this happened; it is morally monstrous to try to use this as justification for killing more than twenty thousand people nytimes.com/2023/12/28/wor…

THIS IS HUGE! A thousand Jewish & Palestinian citizens of Israel are rallying in Tel Aviv against this endless war and in demand for a ceasefire agreement that will bring back the hostages and will stop the killing in Gaza.

Largest rally for peace since the start of the war.

Well well well…

In a rare move, the city of Binghamton (NY) has BANNED a landlord from owning or managing property there for the next 15 years. And then SEIZED 26 of his properties.

Why?

Code violations (aka being a slumlord). This needs to be universal.

“Pauline Newman was the epitome of ‘intersectionality’ long before the term was coined. She became known as ‘the East Side Joan of Arc’, combining housing activism with trade unionism, socialism, the fight for women’s suffrage, and gender and sexual equality” Glyn Robbins in ⤵️

In 1975 the New York Times asked Milton Friedman, Jane Jacobs, Buckminster Fuller, Lewis Mumford, Nathan Glazer, John Kenneth Galbraith, and others for their opinions on how New York City could pull itself out of its fiscal crises.

Here's a thread showing their answers.
