Yesterday, I was witness to an adult dipper giving a lesson in life and in survival to its young. Stage 1 - juvenile expects to get food from parent; stage 2 - juvenile observes parent catching food; stage 3 - juvenile takes first tentative steps into the water...

A dipper looking for food in the Severn at Llanidloes yesterday. Notice the large stone being lifted using its beak at about 54 seconds in. Dippers have strong claws and relatively heavy bones that help them stay submerged for periods of time.

The Fibonacci sequence appears in nature more frequently than one might expect; the branching of trees, arrangement of leaves on a stem, the fruitlets of a pineapple, even the spiral galaxies all exhibit Fibonacci patterns.

This stunning creature is the larva of a great diving beetle - just look at those jaws! They are ferocious predators and are also known as white tigers. I saw this one in a pool near the river Ieithon/Ithon.
