If you're in London and at a loose end tomorrow (Thurs) night, pop along to Waterstones Piccadilly, London where I'll be with Peter Frankopan talking about, well, loads of stuff. 18:30. Come join us. I'll try not to go on about my book too much🤞🤞eventbrite.co.uk/e/ed-conway-in…

🍿Is Chancellor Rachel Reeves REALLY facing such a "dire inheritance"? Today's public finance numbers provided some answers. Here's my sub-three minute primer on what they showed us.👇 Hope it's helpful

In a bid to annoy pretty much everyone, I've written that the problem with the govt's heat pumps plan isn't that it is too disruptive/expensive, but that it isn't disruptive/expensive enough 🫣 Sounds odd but... have a read. Free if you click fast enough thetimes.com/article/ee4628…

British policy's push for heat pumps + hatred of A/C (the same tech!) is bizarre. Chapter O building regs mandate tiny porthole windows for Londoners to control overheating but don't allow A/C, meaning people buy inefficient mobile units and stick the nozzle out their window.

really interesting.... I think Ed Conway has sold me on this. And we do need to make sure that all our new builds are well adapted to future climate.

Good column by Ed Conway in The Times and The Sunday Times today about the benefits of air-based heating/cooling systems. They could also solve a growing condensation problem caused by insulation and sealing out draughts. Ventilation reduced transmission of covid too. thetimes.com/comment/column…

NEW Further positive data on the UK economy: PMIs are useful early barometers of activity. And we just got them for Aug. Services 53.3 points (52.8 was expected) Manufacturing 52.5 points (52.2 exp) Anything above 50 means expansion. So both sectors expanding at a decent whack!

One of the most wonderful things about having a Waterstones book of the month is the pix folks sometimes send me of Material World in window displays. If any of you see it yourself PLEASE take a pic & send it to me so I can keep & remember them when this glorious month is over!

"We are so accustomed to news reports about loneliness — such as this week’s story that middle-aged English adults are the “loneliest in Europe” — that we forget to be properly alarmed by them." Excellent column from James Marriott: thetimes.com/world/europe/a…
