DID YOU KNOW: Anyone can file a public records request in LA! Nationally, public records are governed by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Locally, it's the CA Public Records Act (CPRA). Shoutout Los Angeles Public Press for publishing a great CPRA "how-to"!! lapublicpress.org/2024/03/anyone…

Hey Walgreens and Target are you comfortable using WATERMARK SECURITY who according to the Los Angeles Times uses a rapist ex-cop as a security guard, in addition to other cops who were suspended for their excessive violence? Should your customers feel safe around them? Is it good PR?

Over 20 organizations - including First Amendment Coalition, ACLU SoCal, SPJLA and LA Press Club - sign letter demanding that California officials respect journalist's 1st amendment rights and ensure transparency at homeless sweeps. L.A. TACO🌴🌮 docs.google.com/document/d/1zd…

NEW from me: The NYPD Is Tossing Out Hundreds of Misconduct Cases — Including Stop-and-Frisks — Without Even Looking at Them. These are cases civilian investigators dug into and corroborated. Doesn't matter. propublica.org/article/nypd-t…

This law would make it illegal for nurses to picket at their workplace, for the public to leaflet outside City Hall, or for anyone to display a sign near a police press conference. And the impetus is ensuring synagogues can be used to hawk stolen Palestinian land.

A few months after sending 1000s of cops to raid the school's encampment, leading to multiple ppl being shot in the head w/ "less lethal" munitions, UCLA is now requesting more of those weapons. UCLA is preparing to bring more violence to their students.

LAPD HEADSHOTS UPDATE: The 900+ cops are still pursuing their lawsuit against the city (this is the same case where the L.A. City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto failed to get me to pay alleged damages to the 900+ cops). Since the start of this case (separate from the clawback case!), the 900+ cops…

LAPD officers hope to anonymously shake down the public based on claims they work on "sensitive assignments", but want to stay pseudonymous so the public can't verify their claims. Kafkaesque.

Great story by our client Katey Rusch ⁦UC Berkeley IRP⁩ about hidden agreements that let bad cops hide misconduct & get new jobs. But these are PUBLIC RECORDS if they pay cops $$. Great work by students at ⁦⁦UC Irvine School of Law⁩ in getting the records! sfchronicle.com/projects/2024/…

The fact is that police in most countries don’t see a knife as an excuse to shoot someone - let alone shoot 4 people in a crowded area. And now it looks like there wasn’t even a knife in the first place.

1 in every 3 people killed by a stranger is killed by a police officer. So you might think the biggest threat to your life is some random shooter or gang. But the one organized group that is most likely to shoot and kill you is the police, and it’s not even close.

Super important story👇: California police departments are agreeing to scrub problem officers' disciplinary records clean if they resign. These "clean-record agreements" mean no transparency about past misconduct, and allow bad officers to get rehired. sfchronicle.com/projects/2024/…

Susan E. Seager UC Berkeley IRP UC Irvine School of Law Fantastic work! Naturally, LAPD continued its pattern of CPRA violations -- in particular in response to any request by not even responding, let alone producing any of the public records. It's clearly a systemic pattern that likely reflects internal policy.

At least 163 police agencies across California let cops charged with misconduct retire quietly in exchange for permanently burying the misconduct case. The cops then instantly get hired for other police jobs, and all these secret deals are written by the same police lobby group.

Journalists are entitled to record police. Period. There is no “work zone” exception to the First Amendment. These cops are just making it up as they go. They don’t care if they get sued – it’s your money, not theirs. pressfreedomtracker.us/all-incidents/…
