The ‘h’ in ‘ghost‘ is a historical hiccup. William Caxton, having first practised his trade in Flanders, brought Flemish typesetters back to England to help set up his printing press - they lobbed an ‘h’ into English ‘gost’ because their own native word was ‘gheest’.

Just one politics project funded today. Ten years ago, we used to get 14-16 a year. Ten years from now, I doubt we’ll have any humanities and social sciences left in Australia. Well, maybe the dismal science will survive.

It's harder to get funding for basic research projects than ever before in Australia.

The ARC Discovery Projects scheme now has the lowest “success rate” ever: 16.3%.

Only 1 in 6 grants are funded.

Why? The funding available has plummeted.

Please help, Jason Clare MP❗️

A historic first as 6 former Australian Prime Ministers release a joint statement, 5 of whom managed to spell their own names correctly.

“Why did the College kill my grant?”

Yesterday was the first time most of us have received assessor scores with our rejections.

Many are puzzled:
All As/Bs from Detailed (peer, expert) Assessors but Cs/Ds/Es from General Assessors (College members).

Fellow Holocaust scholars - we are running a very exciting (funded) two day workshop on transnational mobility and memory of perpetrators/collaborators at KCL in June 2024 that you should submit a proposal for!
Send me a DM or reply here for email submission info.

The thing to understand about the work-from-home debate is, there's a set of workers for whom meetings are an annoying distraction from work, and there's a set of middle managers for whom meetings literally *are* the work. You'll never guess which set wants to return to offices.

Hi Jason Clare MP,

This is what chronic underfunding of research looks like.

In the last decade, we're getting:
❌Lowest total $$ granted ($275M v $387M in 2020)
❌Lowest number of projects funded (421 v 660), &
❌Lowest success rate (16.3% v 23.0)

This needs radical change.

There must surely be some mistake: only 6 projects funded under the category History, Heritage and Archaeology, while last year there were 13.... We are going backwards...
