From the Iron Age hill fort of Carl Wark, looking back of Higger Tor Rocks. The purple Heather covered moorlands are just starting to fade, but still look spectacular. #CarlWark #IronAgeHillFort #HiggerTor #peakdistrict #Heather #HeatherSeason

It's #HillfortsWednesday! Here's the trivallate 16.5 hectare Iron Age marvel of Badbury Rings NTKingstonLacy #Dorset looking south ✈️ 📷 in the long hot summer of August 1947 CambridgeDigitalLib (CC BY-NC 3.0) when uncontrolled visitor access was sadly causing huge amounts of erosion

For #HillfortsWednesday we’re visiting Clovelly Dykes in Devon 😍 Our #AerialPhotography contrasts the earthworks in 1932 and 2020! Read about the hillfort’s likely southern extension on pages 29-30 of our North Devon National Landscape aerial mapping report ⬇️ bit.ly/NorthDevonMapp…

Pretty sure we've posted this little guy (left) before: a lead "defixio" from the Palace. Well, imagine our surprise when last week we discovered in the collection another lump of lead, found in 1992, which we're now pretty sure is the head of another defixio...

A remarkable Pictish ring has been discovered at Moray fort after more than 1000 years in the ground by a University dig volunteer who thought he only had a knack for finding 'shiny pebbles' abdn.io/U1

Some beautiful views over Sant Jaume d’Alcanar (Catalonia). It is not yet clear whether it was the fortified house of an indigenous chief or a Phoenician settlement. Early Iron Age (8th- 7th century BC). Ramparts, towers, banquet halls, big ovens, temples... #HillfortsWednesday

Allt-yr-Esgair looming large behind Llangors Lake! There’s something that feels very Iron Age about paddling around on the lake and delighting in the waterfowl under the watchful eye of the hillfort 💕🛖 📍 Llangors, Powys 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 ⏳ Iron Age (c.800 BC-AD 43) #HillfortsWednesday

For #HillfortsWednesday I present Lyle’s Hill, Co. Antrim courtesy of an easyJet flight. Evidence of Neolithic activity before those Iron Age folks built this.

Last week for #HillfortsWednesday I posted some photos of Walbury, Berkshire, and briefly mentioned an early abortive attempt at excavation by a young OGS Crawford in 1907. Here's a thread with a few more details... (1/11) x.com/MartynBarber2/…

the map covered the area as far east as his home at West Woodhay, a village at the foot of the chalk scarp that marked the northern edge of the Hampshire Downs. The map showed the location of the hillfort and other earthworks, and he decided to visit them all. (3/11)

Walbury was the site of Crawford's first attempt at excavation. He was 20, and still an undergraduate at Oxford. In his autobiography 'Said And Done' (1955) he merely noted that he had dug "a few holes" in the hillfort in January 1907 before being stopped by the owner,...(5/11)

Yesterday made it up the lower slopes of what the information board described as 'locally-famous UFO hotspot', Cley Hill, near Warminster. Been past many times. Will try and get to the top next time #HillfortsWednesday
