A fine example showing how archaeological earthworks are progressively obliterated from the landscape surface by agricultural ploughing. Clockwise from top right we have well-preserved (in woodland), partly ploughed out, then totally erased. Gaer Hill, near St. Arvans, S. Wales

Been busy this week prepping for this lecture on how LBA people buried their dead in Scotland. A lot of more sites known now than previously realised and a diverse range of practices. A fun foray outside my usual comfort zone of metal deposition.

I tried to break the mould with a red-headed female leader showing the architect around a newly built hillfort in 2021; child and dog in attendance...

That amazing paper you spent years on? That amazing breakthrough you had? Very likely you built this following the work of others (very few exceptions), just as others will build off yours. Science is a continuum. Want to leave a lasting legacy in science? Be generous & be kind.

Evening sunlight last week on the spectacular tomb of Maen Ceti or Arthur's Stone on Cefn Bryn, Gower.

Twin chambers were formed by hollowing out the ground beneath a massive glacial erratic, which subsequently split sometime in the past.

Can we stop calling National Museum Wales ‘an attraction’. We are not at risk of losing a theme park here. We are at risk of losing an institution that offers free education to millions of people and showcases Welsh culture and the National Treasures of Wales to the world.

Desperately sad news.
Museums are treasure houses of objects and knowledge, founts of inspiration for future generations, places of wonder - and research. Places that invite us to see ourselves in a deep, wide context.
Our society and culture is impoverished if we lose them.

This site is going to be the one talked about in British prehistory for years and years. And the way it was excavated and published and their social media output will serve as a model. In awe

Always thinking about the Roman epitaph plaque written from the perspective of a little white dog named Pearl, who slept on a mattress and was beloved by her family 🥺
