As a social movement scholar, it's so enraging to see universities taking brutal and draconian measures against student protestors when I know for a fact that many also brag about how they do "cutting-edge" research on social movements. Some even have social movement archives! /1

Friends whose scholarly societies meet at the Congress of Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences: McGill Law profs are on strike! Tell your executive committee and McGill University that and you do not want to cross @AMPL/AMPD's picketline. Urge the McGill senior adminis to return to the bargaining table now!

The University of Calgary put up signs saying, "Disrupt something." They didn't add, "and when you do, we'll call in the riot police."

We already saw during COVID how agricultural exceptionalism is alive and well in the US. Meatpacking workers paid the consequences. This 🧵gives a good sense of how unprepared we are to address H5N1 - we have literally learned nothing.

The two stats I learned this week that blew me away were that the US federal govt gives more to Lockheed Martin than to the Dept of Education, and that some universities get more from Dept of War than they do from tuition. Upended my understanding of universities as warmakers.

Anyone who is aware of what the ethanol and biodiesel industry are doing to jerry-rig US policies knows that’s absolutely true. There is nothing sustainable about 🌽 ethanol and soy biodiesel, and scaling them up would be disastrous (and very expensive for taxpayers).

RBC, Scotiabank, TD, BMO & CIBC have pumped $1.2 Trillion into fossil fuels since 2016. "Canada’s big banks are still lighting the fuses of carbon bombs, pouring billions into fossil fuel financing during the hottest year on record." - Richard Brooks ☀️ nationalobserver.com/2024/05/14/new…

"In 2022, 91% of NL’s energy came from renewable hydro. Why does 1/3 of our population live in energy poverty when we have so much renewable energy? Why are towns struggling to pay heat & light for rec centres, rinks, churches & community centres...?"

In the 1930s and 40s, the US Dept of Agriculture published guides on how to spot quality clothing and take care of things you own. The guides were surprisingly sophisticated. This guide on men's suits covered fabrics like gabardine, serge, covert, and tropical worsted.

- The ICC warrants won't end starvation and genocide in Gaza. - The ICJ & Sec. Council aren't providing clear enough language to end starvation and genocide in Gaza - The US pier isn't enough to end starvation and genocide in Gaza. So let me spell this out: CEASE. FIRE. NOW.

Have heard from more than one grad student that their supervisors said that they HAD to attend Congress when said supervisors found out about their intentions to boycott. It's horrifying that supervisors are telling their students not to act on their political beliefs. /1

Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped. disconnect.blog/generative-ai-…
