Messages from school leaders are my new

Way better than 'Talks too much' and 'Does not come prepared to class.'

We're here to make school leadership less lonely and ensure that can focus on the things that matter most.

Sometimes supporting leaders means giving them permission to chase their own peace.

Just because you do something, doesn’t mean you have to keep doing it.

Interesting threads coming through in our teacher retention book so far:
- Belonging and psychological safety
- Professional trust and agency
- Being part of a community
- Teaching being a well respected profession

Without these things, people leave.

We don't have a signature solution.

We don't have a 5 step process.

We have expertise, conversation, and care.

We take care of the adults in schools so that they can take care of the kids.

I want our teachers to have agency - to be reflective, creative and critical thinkers in the classroom.

That's the best way to nurture their students to be reflective, creative and critical thinkers too.

There is no magic lever for retaining good people.

There is only time, attention, and care.

Unstructured play time for children has decreased 25% since the 1980's. Children need playtime at home and school. Their mental, physical, social, and emotional wellness depend on it. Give children recess and playtime!

One school year closes.

Pause. Reflect.

Then watch a TED-Ed talk that will help you think differently about how to lead your organization for the next year.

(I think it's a great one. )

I've heard before: “Students need to know the consequences of their actions', and: “It was better in the old days when we could easily suspend students”. Consequences aren't gone, but we have learned from the past, and what to do better

Having a terrible school administrator can literally ruin your life — mentally, emotionally, financially, socially. The gaslighting, manipulation, ineptitude, deception. Smh. I am so sorry for any who have been forced to suffer through this.

Dear District + School Leaders,

You don't need an in person meeting for people to complete a task or checklist.

You can differentiate the approach.

Then cancel the meeting.

Sincerely,
Those Of Us Who Have Worked In Schools

The thing about school culture is that…

it’s the small things
done by many people
over time
that builds up
towards greatness
or ruin.

Principals shouldn’t be middle managers, they should run their buildings. What a huge mistake it’s been to think principals need a principal who needs a principal.
