I spoke to the Washington Post about the challenges to getting aid into Gaza as aid actors and diplomats try to secure the passage of assistance into the area tomorrow. washingtonpost.com/world/2023/10/…

I think I need to say what many in the strategic studies community is quietly thinking, and indeed saying to me.

Israel appears qualitatively far weaker than we had presupposed, and the dysfunction has bleed into many facets of their political and security apparatus (not all).

Why are we comparing whose actions are worse, Hamas or ISIS? You can condemn brutality without this.

I won't get drawn into that game but worth remembering ISIS executed 1000s of Yezedis & enslaved/raped their women, & killed/tortured so many Syrians, Iraqis, & Western hostages.

Agreed 100%

If you're stuck focusing on attribution for Al Ahli this morning you're getting left behind. Regional politics are moving way faster than events on the ground. Perceptions of regional states, both of US and Israeli intent are more important than facts at this point.

Western rush to support Israel has eroded efforts to win over the Global South on Ukraine, poisoning months of diplomatic outreach and consensus-building that officials and diplomats say is already bolstering Russia’s arguments

More than 400 attacks on hospitals in Syria were met with 10yrs of painful policy escalation that to date resulted in minor amendments to the UN’s deconfliction mechanism TORs and nothing else.

We must meaningfully work to end any loss of life in medical centers in conflict.

Assad appears to believe his title as perpetrator of some the bloodiest massacres of this generation is being threatened.

Footage is horrific. The loss of life is enormous. I hope to never see so many children’s bodies again in this lifetime.

Attacking hospitals is never acceptable.

Biden just hours away from visiting Israel. Tensions extremely high across the region. Critical hours ahead.

Dr Abu-Sitta is well known across the region for his humanitarian work. His testimony is chilling. I’m not sure ‘humanitarian catastrophe’ (as it’s being described in official statements) adequately describes the bonfire of international laws and humanity going on in Gaza.

Parties to conflict cannot pick & choose which rules of international humanitarian law to follow. These rules are non-negotiable.
Attacks on civilians are NEVER justified & there is no question of reciprocity.

We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed. Issam was part of a Reuters crew in southern Lebanon who was providing a live signal.

Reuters journalists Thaer Al-Sudani and Maher Nazeh also sustained injuries and are seeking medical care.

There are fifty elections due to take place around the world next year. It's pretty darn clear from the last week that social media is not presently equipped to support those events without breaking a few societies along the way.
