During the family reunion, I walked through downtown Coffeeville, MS with my family, and the history of #segregation & Jim Crow was everywhere. First, a new mural depicts the segregated Hamblett Hotel in town, (long closed). It shows a Black butler attending to White guests 1/N

Instead of reading “Hillbilly Elegy” read “My Mother Wasn’t Trash” by Joshua Wilkey. A much more compassionate look at people struggling, and dying, in Appalachia. I’ve assigned it as reading in my classes since 2018. jwilkey.com/post/my-mother…

New Pew Research Center report on childless/childfree. Growing share who say it's unlikely they'll have children, & those <50 more often report not wanting kids as the main reason compared to those 50+, who often report other obstacles. pewresearch.org/social-trends/…

"Childless" women are only a "problem" because the US uses motherhood as a key mechanism to force women into filling the gaps in our economy and our social safety net and into such precarious positions that it's too risky to complain.

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) is a no brainer investment. If it were to be made permanent, the CTC would have large long-term benefits for future earnings, health, reduced crime, etc. Benefits would outweigh costs 10:1. Important work by Ananat & Garfinkel nber.org/papers/w32870?…

After waiting more than a year (thanks, congress), Suzanne Bell and I finally received our notice of award for our R01 to study the fertility, maternal health, and infant health consequences of Dobbs! Lots of papers in progress, so stay tuned.

It'll take time for researchers to capture the full impact of abortion bans on maternal health, as the types of data I typically use won't be available for a while. But these stories already show the harm—we don't need to wait for stats to see the toll.
