Native son of Donington, Lincs, Matthew Flinders took his cat Trim with him when he circumnavigated Australia. Trim was named after the servant of Uncle Toby in Laurence Sterne's extraordinary novel "The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman", first published in 1759.
