What no one tells you is that the worst place to be is in the transition from early-career to a mid-career status. You no longer qualify for post-doctoral stuff or are treated as overqualified, you start competing with academics with permanent roles and settled trajectories.

2 years ago I was returning to my alma mater as a lecturer, knowing today would've been my last day. I fortunately get to stay one more year in this place I've always deeply felt was my natural academic home. Sad not to know if my future is still here, but grateful this happened.
