Current conditions: Rain arrived last night, creating a bit of breathing room for our crews. Thanks to the rain, fire did not reach Fort Smith or Hay River. Fire is not expected to reach either community today.

At 1:30am, Fort Smith Protective Services updated that fire activity near the town had calmed down and that almost everyone had been evacuated to safety.

Last Friday the wildland firefighting community lost Zak Muise.

Like so many of us drawn to a career in wildland fire, Zak loved the outdoors.

His family have shared with us that he loved life, particularly camping, snowboarding and golf.
