Thrift is the county flower of the Isles of Scilly, & the Isle of Bute, off Scotland. Also known as Sea-Pink, Our Lady’s Cushion & Cliff Rose, in Gaelic it means ‘Beach Wave.’ Thrift was the emblem on the British threepenny coin from 1937 to 1952.

The Mermaid, by Howard Pyle, 1910. Is she rescuing him or about to pull him under? This enigmatic painting was left on the artist’s easel in his studio when he set off from America for Italy. He died in Florence a year later, so never returned to complete it.

The Stygian owl is so-called after the River Styx in the Greek Underworld. Stygian also means extremely dark, gloomy & forbidding. Almost wholly nocturnal, it is known as the devil’s owl in Brazil, as its eyes glow red when reflected with light.
