All the glowing on this map is from gas flaring - it might look pretty from above, but it’s causing toxic air pollution all over the Gulf, from Iraq and Iran to the UAE. And it’s almost entirely avoidable. Watch the doc on iPlayer: bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod… YouTube later today

This is infuriating to read. Corruption exacerbates poverty & inequality, as the needs of the general population are neglected while a small elite benefits, eroding the social fabric. The corrupt elites of Iraq & the #Kurdistan Region are robbing millions & millions of people of

Homosexuality is now punishable by up to 15 years in prison in Iraq. Instead of passing laws that would protect and help Iraqis, parliament is doing the exact opposite. Horrific and unacceptable.

A very interesting finding in UNDP Iraq's new report on corruption prosecutions in the Kurdistan Region: "there were no high-ranking officials compared to the federal level." Instead "accountability for corruption is still largely concentrated at the lower government levels."

Meanwhile, UNDP Iraq has yet to bring its own corrupt staff to account. All it has done since my The Guardian investigation in January is to carry out performative internal assessments and produce vague action plans, all aimed at appeasing donors rather than punishing the culprits
