The last few years have seen Britain step up to lead the world time and again in the defence of peace and freedom 🇬🇧

This weekend was no different. With the Royal Air Force and our allies preventing a catastrophic attack on regional stability.

Last night the UK intercepted and destroyed multiple one-way attack drones - launched by Iran and its proxies - that posed a threat to civilian lives in the Middle East.

Iran’s attack last night was a dangerous and unnecessary escalation.

I want to pay tribute to the professionalism and bravery of the Royal Air Force and our allies in protecting civilians.

Additional Royal Air Force jets and air refuelling tankers have deployed to the Middle East to bolster Op Shader, the UK’s existing counter-Daesh operation in Iraq & Syria.
 
In addition, the jets will intercept airborne attacks within range of our existing missions. My statement:

The seizure of the cargo ship MSC Aries by Iran is unacceptable and a blatant violation of international law.

We call for the unconditional release of the ship and its crew without delay.

We are working with partners to prevent escalation in the Middle East. Iran must cease…

The urgency with which we armed Ukraine taught us we can and must do better to arm our own warfighters. 

That’s why we’ve now reformed military procurement to get the weapons we need to defend the UK into the hands of our soldiers, sailors and aviators years ahead of schedule.

It might sound impossible but the UK will very soon have lasers that shoot down missiles & drones at the speed of light.

How? Because we’ve reformed military procurement to speed up projects that could’ve taken decades, to urgently get the new weapons we need to defend Britain.

The Armed Forces can’t and won’t be intimidated.

Those inside Ministry of Defence 🇬🇧 stand up to dictators & terrorists every day - patriots, many of whom put their lives at risk to protect us all.

Those targeting us today are the opposite, cowardly criminals who I’m glad to see arrested.

Today, the Royal Air Force participated in the largest international airdrop of aid into Gaza since the conflict began.

The UK has dropped over 53 tonnes of aid into Gaza, as we ramp up deliveries by land, sea and air.

Six Royal Air Force Typhoons & more than 200 aviators have deployed to Romania to co-lead NATO’s air policing mission near the Black Sea.

It has never been more important for our defence that we forge strong partnerships with our allies.

That’s why today we’ve announced we’re scoping like-minded nations, including Japan, to join some of our AUKUS pillar two work streams.

The Entente Cordiale changed the course of history.

It laid the foundations for our victorious alliances in the world wars, the defence of freedom during the Cold War & now our shared support for Ukraine.

As we celebrate 120 years of the Entente Cordiale, I hosted my French counterpart Sébastien Lecornu to share UK expertise & discuss ongoing cooperation to give Ukraine the support they need to kick Putin out.

On this day in 1982, the Falklands task force sailed on Thatcher’s orders to liberate the islands.

Today, because of those who sailed in that armada the Falklands remain forever British, and it’s in the shadow of their legacy that our Armed Forces continue to defend the islands.

On NATO’s 7️⃣5️⃣th anniversary, the alliance of 32 nations is stronger than ever - working together to protect our security, prosperity and sovereignty.

Russia's aggression in Europe has already led to NATO expansion. I've no doubt others will want to consider whether it's time to join in with our collective security.
It’s important for Europe's defence that we stand together.
