The sun has set over South Africa, and a glider wings silently through the sky. Glider? They're called Sailplanes now, and SA is a growing world leader in their manufacturing. Improving electric engines for motor-gliders is today's goal.

Remembering the worst maritime disaster in Kenya’s history, 30 years ago today: the ferry MV Mtongwe capsized just 40 metres from Mombasa’s shore. 272 of 400 passengers died. See my website the Calendar of African History for April 29 here: africatodayyesterday.org/days/29-apr

Namibia's grain harvest this year is down by 53% from last year, and will meet less than half of Namibians' cereal needs. Blame goes to drought worsened by Climate Change for the food production drop. However, 'Irrigation Green Scheme' wheat is doing well, up 68% from last year.

Congrats Zimbabwe: Kiwi is New Zealand's big thing, but Zim is producing record kiwi crops and exports (firstly to Japan), and is gaining on South Africa, Africa's #1 kiwi producer. Smart Zim is producing value-added products like kiwi cosmetics and jams.🇿🇼🥝

Swollen with rainwater and mud, Rwanda's Akanyaru River makes its meandering way through the green countryside. As a kid I'd paddle a canoe back and forth across an identical twisting river, enjoying the silence and tranquility of the journey.

Today in 1898 the Hut Tax Wars erupt in Sierra Leone as two separate rebellions in the north and south. Both are revolts against British colonial rule, symbolised by a tax on Africans' houses. See all that happened April 28 on my African History website africatodayyesterday.org/days/28-apr

Medieval fortress in the forest. Connected by mud walls, these tall huts resemble towers of an ancient castle, with cross pattern wall carvings adding to the image. This Benin, in West Africa.

Today in 1932, Imperial Airways opens its London to Cape Town mail service to passengers. Because of multiple stops, flying from London to Cape Town takes TEN days. But the poster was one of the coolest ever! See my Calendar of African History for April 27 africatodayyesterday.org/days/27-apr

Glowing at dusk. The capital city of Cabo Verde, Praia, glows like a bed of hots coals as the Saturday sun disappears behind the port's sheltering mountain and the Atlantic horizon.

Something to shout about, has this Beninois woman! Benin has an inflation rate of 1% (some sources say 2%). Considering this past year has seen record high global inflation (you shop and so you know!) this is remarkable. Reason: good harvests cut cost of food.🇧🇯

Botswana chooses cattle over wildebeest? It's not that simple, of course, but 'fencing to protect cattle from contact with migratory wild animals' has seen wildebeest in Central Kahalari decline from 500K to 260K in the 1970’s to 1,000 now. East Africa too theeastafrican.co.ke/tea/science-he…

Savanah sunrise, Saturday, silhouetting lone acacia tree whose long roots allow it to survive in the low-water environment. To keep their leaves uneaten, acacias encircle them with thick thorns.

Geothermal power is abundant in East Africa's Rift Valley, offering clean, renewable energy to help save the world against global warming. By 2030, the geothermal capacity of Kenya and Ethiopia alone will surpass Europe, and will rise 6x from 2023 to 2050, from 34 to 222 TWh.

Furrowed landscape. The Kalahari Desert in Botswana offers varied, contrasting features, all beautiful, like this great red, worried-looking swatch of sand dune between green thorn trees beneath a peaceful blue sky.
