1/3 Today’s M6.4 EQ offshore Vancouver Island joins several others this July, all in the same region. They’re notable for their size & number, but this swarm of eqs does not represent a threat. They are NOT located on the Cascadia subduction zone, but are much farther offshore.

Last week an offshore quake on the Juan de Fuca Ridge triggered Washington’s 1st USGS ShakeAlert earthquake early warning message. The message only alerted some in the NW corner of the state. PNSN Director Harold Tobin explains more on KING 5 News. youtu.be/ldgS_2IpwcA?si…

For Temblor's latest, becca owen explored a new study that imaged the Cascadia Subduction Zone. Findings help illuminate the risk posed to coastal communities by "the really big one." Thanks to Suzanne Carbotte, Harold Tobin, and John Cassidy. temblor.net/temblor/cleare…

New in-depth explanation of our recent seismic study that brings megathrust segmentation into focus. I made a quick sketch to illustrate a point about the width of the seismogenic zone, but I was surprised when becca owen and temblor wanted to use it! temblor.net/temblor/cleare…

Very good explanation by NBC News' Evan Bush about the alert in Japan for a Nankai Trough 'Big One.' I am paying close attention to how this is received by the public there and thinking about how we should respond should a similar event occur in Cascadia. nbcnews.com/science/enviro…

In depth analysis of the Nankai Megathrust Alert issued by the Japanese government agency JMA, written by Toda and Stein for temblor Spot-on, in my view. temblor.net/temblor/japan-…

Happy #FieldworkFriday! Join field staff as they pack for a trip to site GPW on Glacier Peak to upgrade the old (2001) analog station. Staff will hike two days out to the remote site, and receive equipment via helicopter sling. Stay tuned for the result of all this hard work!

Here's an in-depth followup to the 'megaquake advisory' story, with some discussion of Cascadia, and of the aftermath of the Kaikoura event in New Zealand. Bonus: muddy field trip photos in Grays Harbor WA with the legendary Brian Atwater. By Evan Bush nbcnews.com/science/enviro…

Happy #FieldworkFriday! Remember the time lapse video of us packing trailers last week? THIS is where all that stuff got delivered, 7700ft up on the side of Glacier Peak! The 20 mile hike to station GPW was an epic adventure and possibly the network's most ambitious upgrade ever.

The end of an era for scientific ocean drilling - what comes next? I talked to Maya Wei-Haas for The New York Times about the importance of borehole observatories in the sea floor for the science and hazard of subduction zone earthquakes and tsunamis. JOIDES Resolution nytimes.com/2024/08/26/sci…

After 40 years of groundbreaking science, the JOIDES Resolution—the ship that drilled for our planet's deepest secrets—returned from what may be its last expedition. There's no concrete plan for replacement and scientists are worried. I report The New York Times ... nytimes.com/2024/08/26/sci…

Earthquakes know no borders! Today, Canada’s Natural Resources announced that the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system is now live in British Columbia, ushering in a new era of early warning alert coverage across all of Cascadia.  PNSN welcomes our partners to the north! (1/3)

Field trip on the eastern coast of Taiwan: uplifted wave-cut notches and terraces in volcaniclastic rocks, produced by multiple Holocene earthquakes associated with the rapid rise of the Coastal Range. Bruce Shyu of NTU was a fantastic guide to this amazing place.
