My group and I have always wondered if it would be possible to arrest the lateral growth of one-dimensional crystals and grow longer nanowires. Here, we show that Pierls-like dimerization in NbS3 promotes the 1D growth of nanowires with lengths approaching the cm-scale! (1/3)
