Amateur does 2-4 weeks of beach volleyball camp per year. Comes back in good shape with way superior skills. Easily beats his usual competition. Now imagine you keep doing what you did there — for 6+ months out of the year. You'll turn into a completely different beast.

An example of this in extreme form is when you make a pass in volleyball to the side of your front foot ("emergency" technique when there’s too little time to get into the optimal stance). Many players struggle here, too—takes a good amount mobility & strength through the trunk.

- effortlessly drop into & maneuver in hip flexion (lunge, side lunge, squat) - fast sprint acceleration - can decelerate & change direction on a dime - powerful rotation (throw, cut, swing) - good at converting high horizontal speed into vertical jump - crawling & tumbling

This is true, especially in the beginning! With the caveat: - diminishing returns are real - don’t become a bench press specialist over a throwing/hitting specialist - monitor if & how it might impact your body mechanics & technique
