Lower Curtis Glacier thinning and retreat continues. 8-6-2024 survey indicates 21 m retreat this year. Mass balance will again be quite negative.

Coleman Glacier on Mount Baker terminus survey 8-7-2024. Thinning on our 1988 profile line is ~40 m, nearly 1 m per year. Retreat over 600 m-more specific later.

Many Svalbard glaciers in August 2024 are snow free as was the case in 2022 and 2023. NASA Landsat 8-8-2024 image illustrates how widespread this is across Edgeoya and Spitsbergen. glacierchange.blog/2024/08/17/wid…

Either that or subglacial channels, which tend to be a bit curvy and long, what is the orientation with respect to flow and the margin?

Mauri Pelto (@realglacier) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Not a surprise to see that the ice cliffs themselves are not a stable enough feature to endure. If that were not the case more ice cliffs of this height would be observed today for longer periods.

Mauri Pelto (@realglacier) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Was never likely. If tall ice cliffs were a stable feature that could endure, they would exist more commonly around ice sheets now.

NOAA led State of the Climate 2023 report published in BAMS is out. The cover is a pair of images I took of a glacier that dissappeared in 2023 after 40 years of our continuous monitoring, overall the cryosphere not faring well. This report filled with so much specific detail. Cover images taken by me of Ice Worm Glacier that disappeared in 2023 after we monitored forty years in a row.

Always a key resource on the annual progression of climate change. Cover images of The loss of Ice Worm Glacier is a 40 year progression from stable size to gone. This summer the decay continued as remnant ice is hollowed out.

These ice cave channels have become so commonplace now, they are a good study in glacier decay. Including caves starting from the top of the glacier as seen here at Ice Worm Glacier

On Aug. 4 we drilled stakes into Sholes Glacier using ice augur provided by Ben Pelto. Three weeks later melt had averaged 0.08 m per day. This is 36000 m3 per day of runoff for North Fork Nooksack River.

Many examples this August of glaciers across Svalbard that have essentially lost all snow cover and where firn area has rapidly been lost, just one example of climate stress in Svalbard.
