Fascinating visit to St Nicholas Abbey, a sugar plantation from 1650. Men harvested sugar cane - backbreaking work - & then sent it to the mill.

Indentured servants worked alongside enslaved Africans. Irish women were in cane fields until 1670s & as domestics in big house.

The archives in Barbados are incredibly complete for the 17C. Spent a glorious day in search of Irish women & found plenty of Bodkins, Byrnes, Daniels, Dillons, Kellys, Kennys, Lynches, Neals, O’Sheas, Rices & more.

One third of all indentured servants to 🇧🇧were 🇮🇪 women.

Charles Fort near Bridgetown dates from 1650 while this military garrison is from 19C. It is now home to the Barbados Museum & Historical Society. An earlier 18th one is still in use by the Bajan army. Needless to say lots of soldiers from Ireland passed through these gates.
