Contreras was adamant he wasn't blaming J.D. Martinez or where either were positioned behind/at the plate.

'There's always a risk in being a catcher. ... The risk is always going to be there. I'm not blaming any part of my game because this happened tonight.'

In Contreras' absence, Iván Herrera will take over the primary catching duties. Pedro Pagés is en route to St. Louis. He'll be the back up.

Willson Contreras will have surgery on his fractured arm. The initial timeline for recovery is 6-8 weeks.

The Cardinals lose to the Mets, 7-5. They're six games under .500. They've lost their last three series. And they're without arguably their best player for the foreseeable future. #STLCards
