My take away from the comments is that people who don't work on autonomous cars better understand what it takes to bring an autonomous car to market than the people who do work autonomous cars.

Okay, since steve o'grady is a pal, here are my thoughts on IBM buying Hashicorp. First - congratulations to all my Hashicorp people - it's an incredible accomplishment to have built a company like that, and a crazy thing to have someone value what you built at $4B+. Congratulations.

A bit of cognitive dissonance that everyone just accepts is that no one thinks Waymo or Cruise are trillion dollar opportunities but if Tesla says “robotaxi” then investors lose their minds.

Is this true? Waymo doesn't have a working AI model? I understand the need for remote intervention, but is it all smoke and mirrors?

From a tech and safety prospective, Waymo seems to be combining lidar, cameras, and radar to potentially exceed what a human driver can do. Why all this talk about the future when Waymo can do this today?

If autonomous cars are the future then why is Waymo not worth a trillion dollars?

I... would absolutely pull basically a complete 180 in my assessment of IBM if they were to do this. It'd be the most interesting / relevant thing they could do, which is exactly why I'd bet they won't.

But I would absolutely love to see it.

I'm sure somewhere in the multiverse Kelsey Hightower is killing it at IBM.
