Our 1st look at primary sources in history class this yr:
✅13 docs/artifacts related to the origins of slavery in America
✅Ss were tasked w/ taking brief notes over the docs (15min given to finish)
✅as a class we talked over the costs of slavery (dignity/humanity/comfort/etc)

Getting kids to act like historians helps them recall information. You can do these CSI types of things with different historical events.

Love it and have used it for past several years. Had to skip it this year since 90% of this year's Ss stayed with me for second straight year and had already done it. Will use next year again!

If you want to teach your kids about historical thinking skills, try a murder mystery!
✅ examining evidence
✅ corroboration
✅ sourcing
✅ close reading
✅ context clues
✅ making claims & defending them

I'd highly recommend using Stanford History Education Group's 'Lunchroom Fight' lesson in your first few weeks this school year. Ss like it b/c its relatable, prompts good conversation, and helps present the ideas of bias/perspective in an interesting way!
