Less than 20 years ago, the world was headed for a >4C warmer world by 2100. The amount of change that would occur under that much warming, that fast, was almost unimaginable and certainly unsurvivable for human civilization + a large percentage of the world's species. (thread)

Mike Inouye Stephen B Montgomery Francisco De La Vega Gerome Breen AllofUsResearch 💯 agree that UKB has been transformative for careers (mine & others) and the field. As far as national biobanks go, UKB really is an exception with such broad access. Hopefully, all will ultimately fall suit.

Having spent much of my 20's in the Cambridge Blue, I can honestly say I don't remember any of the various living rooms I had but can recall every table, bench and chair in that glorious pub.

This is so true - the AllofUsResearch access issue (the lack of access outside the USA) makes me and many other scientists very uncomfortable. It looks and feels like biobank nationalism.

I hope all the countries, including my own, follow the footpaths of UK Biobank. There is no place for patriotism when it comes to human genetics. We all belong to the same family.

If UK Biobank had decided to restrict access to only UK researchers and non-profit researchers, it wouldn't have become what it is now—the God of all biobanks, the single most important genetic resource ever in the history of human genetics.

Final hour at an excellent listening to another set of USA based researchers presenting findings from UK Biobank - every other talk in relation to common disease. Fantastic that this is possible .

SP Kalantri Nouri Ben Zakour, PhD 🇫🇷🇷🇪🇦🇺 The Lancet The authors could have chosen to publish in an open access journal.

The Lancet is published by Elsevier, they make huge profits from authors who submit their work & peers who review it for free.

We don’t have to play this game any more!

Drug resistant is a serious public health problem in India.
The Lancet published a game changing paper—and hid it behind a paywall—that shows 9-month regimen is as good as 24-month one.

Doctors who treat potentially fatal TB can’t read the paper.
Who's the paper for?

There were always two different visions for eLife: 1) A CNS competitor for 'outstanding' papers. 2) A game-changing OA venue that improves scientific publishing. The tension we are seeing may be because these are incompatible.

10 reasons why I love academia Dr Eva Lantsoght academictransfer.com/en/blog/10-rea…

Academics have incredible privileges no doubt (despite difficult moments)

Would add academics have a special role in society- theyre meant to be public pillars of knowledge, objective, unconflicted, *generous*
