Shame on Billion to One. Aesthetic qualities should NEVER be part of a prenatal clinical test. It may seem harmless to patients, but as genetic counselors, we know the rotten history of the genetics field. Now it's red hair and freckles - will intelligence or athleticism be next?

A super interesting and important talk from Jay Vaunado II (he/him) at on languishing ('feeling stuck in cement/limbo') in genetic counselors. I hadn't heard of this term before - I appreciate this work on mental/emotional health and well-being in GCs 👏

DONE! I am tired but renewed and certain that our future is bright. Speaking to OGs and current students…all your words, encouragement mean so much. Love y’all…but I gotta sleep! Gonna start up some new media accounts on the flight so send me your handles!

Another very important question - there are well-described issues with bias in AI. How can we ensure that this won't exacerbate disparities in genomics? A few things that may help are GCs being involved in development, quality over quantity. ^ER

Great audience Q - what about liability if my cloned voice is used to answer patient questions? Right now in their practice, the GC reviews everything and it is their responsibility to ensure accuracy/quality. ^ER

AS: in response to GCs with 'invisible' genetic condition, which may not be seen as important as those with visible conditions: don't downplay. your experience and perspective is also important. it's not just about what's visible, and find 'your people' ^BST

AS: emphasizes the importance of finding 'your people' who may not have exactly your same experience. shoutout to genetic counselors with disabilities group. ^BST

Aarin Ables Williams (she/her) carefully reflecting on experiences as a student. the responsibility shouldn't be on the student to navigate difficult processes where they don't have the power to get what they need to be successful ^BST

Aarin Ables Williams (she/her) call to action to those genetic counselors who do possess some of that power to help. being the light for students in the sometimes very dark experience of being in graduate school. reach back and provide that light. ^BST

What a privilege it was to be up on stage with some amazing researchers talking about GCs’ perspectives on polygenic risk scores in clinical practice. 🧬 Integrating Genomics into Medicine a special thanks to Dr Tatiane Yanes for her help with this research and for connecting me with the opportunity!

Amazing talk by Neil Shah at ! It’s time to amplify our efforts in graduate programs and workplaces! It's imperative we actively cultivate spaces that affirm minorities’ intrinsic right to belong.

I’m also leaving with an abundance of awe in our students, new grads, and next gen of GCs who continue to hold us all accountable, who work tirelessly (and quickly!) to right wrongs whenever possible. It’s relentless work and I hope supervisors & mentors continue to support them.

What I take away from this conference is a reinforced sense of urgency. Our fractured community reflects our fractured society. If we’re not protecting & supporting each other in our grief and anger, how do we hold space for our patients? What are we saying to those who need us?

It’s prostate cancer awareness month. Prostate cancer can be hereditary. There is a 50% chance siblings and children could have the same genetic risk factor for prostate cancer as well as breast, ovarian, etc.
