Director of programs at NAC, Mrs Chimwemwe Mablekisi has emphasised that injectable PrEP is being introduced as an additional HIV prevention option and that it is not replacing the available HIV prevention methods like Condoms, VMMC, screening and treatment of STIs

The second phase will have a total of 41 sites in the two districts.
Lessons that will be learned during this implementation science study will assist to manage the implementation modalities during the roll out phase.

The media briefing session took place today at the Riverside Hotel in Lilongwe. DHA director madam Rose Nyirenda has indicated that six sites have started administering this new option in the first phase (3 in Blantyre and Lilongwe each).

NAC in collaboration with Ministry of Health through DHA plus HES engaged members of the media to brief them on the progress that has been made after introducing the injectable PrEP on as an additional option in prevention of HIV through the implementation science study.

Daudi adds the suspect revealed she was buying the gentamicin injection medication from pharmacies within town, removing the original stickers, and rebranding them with the Gammora labels.

“A number of HIV patients have been duped by the suspect, which prompted them to report her to the police, leading to her arrest,” says Daudi.

Mangochi Police spokesperson Amina Daudi says the suspect has been advertising and offering for sale Gammora injection medicine, claiming that it was the cure for HIV.

'The suspect was selling and administering a dosage of three bottles at a sum of K120, 000.

Police in Mangochi have arrested a 25-year-old woman identified as Mary Julius on allegation that she was selling gentamicin injection as an HIV/AIDS cure through her TikTok page.

The HIV and AIDS Act criminalises stigma and discrimination, unlawful disclosure of one's HIV positive status as well as use of derogatory words against PLHIV.The Act pronounces a fine of K5 million and a five-year imprisonment for those found guilty.

Bail has since been revoked and the convict remanded awaiting sentencing on Friday, 8th March 2024.

Upon hearing the submissions from both sides, it was proved beyond reasonable doubt that an offence was committed; hence, the court found him guilty on charges that bordered on violating prohibitions in the HIV and AIDS Act.

The lady moved the court by lodging a complaint at Balaka Police Station where action was taken and the man was arrested.

In a case bordering on violation of the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Management) Act Number 9 of 2018, the Balaka Resident Magistrate Court has convicted a man who called a person living with HIV (PLHIV) 'wa Edzi'.
